Health Checkup: Cholesterol

DALLAS, TX (KERA) - In a recent report, the American Pediatrics Association and other medical groups advised cholesterol screening for all children nine to 11 years old. In our KERA Health Checkup, Sam Baker talked about this with Dr. Jeff Schussler, a cardiologist with Baylor University Medical Center. He says some nine to 11 year old children already are being screened.

WFAA: Frozen Balloons Treat 'Broken' Hearts
A medical condition that affects more than 2 million Americans is being frozen in its tracks, thanks to a new procedure. The treatment for Atrial Fibrillation is being done in Dallas for the first time at Baylor Hamilton Heart and Vascular Hospital. It's a new advanced technique using cold energy or freezing to selectively destroy abnormal heart cells that are causing arrhythmia conditions.

Dr. Kevin Wheelan of HeartPlace Baylor presented a paper at the International Oriental Congress of Cardiology in Shanghai China May 30, 2010 on the results of a new technique for Atrial Fibrillation using freezing with a cryoballoon. He also lectured at the major medical schools in Beijing and Dalian China; as well as at the largest cardiac centers in Shanghai, Beijing WeHan and Dalian China during a 10 day tour of these facilities. Dr. Wheelan spoke about Atrial Fibrillation Ablation and Resynchronization Therapy for heart failure and prevention of sudden death as well as aspect of organization of the cardiovascular healthcare delivery system is the US. Dr. Wheelan said "It was a very intersestiing and busy trip."

HeartPlace is now an Accredited Echocardiography Laboratory

HeartPlace was granted accreditation by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories (ICAEL). The laboratory is one of the first thousand echocardiography laboratories in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico to be so recognized for its commitment to high quality patient care and its provision of quality diagnostic testing.

The ICAEL was established with the support of the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE), the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and the Society of Pediatric Echocardiography (SOPE) to provide a peer review mechanism to encourage and recognize the provision of quality echocardiographic diagnostic evaluations by a process of voluntary accreditation. A non-profit organization, the ICAEL is dedicated to ensuring high quality patient care and to promoting health care.

Participation in the accreditation process is voluntary. Accreditation status signifies that the facility has been reviewed by an independent agency which recognizes the laboratory's commitment to quality testing for the diagnosis of heart disease.
