What is Cardiogenic Shock?

Cardiogenic shock is a condition where the entire body is not receiving adequate blood flow due to damage to the heart muscle, often due to a heart attack. Other conditions which may weaken the heart include:
Myocarditis

  • Medication/drug overdose

What are the Symptoms of Cardiogenic Shock?

Symptoms of cardiogenic shock can include the following:

  • Cool hands and feet
  • Pale, clammy skin

How is Cardiogenic Shock Diagnosed?

Tests used to quickly identify causes of shock include:​

  • Invasive blood pressure monitoring

  • Coronary Angiography
  • Pulmonary Artery Catheterization
  • Cardiac enzyme blood test

What is the Treatment for Cardiogenic Shock?

Emergent medical treatment is necessary to restore blood flow to the heart and the body’s organs to prevent irreversible damage.  Because cardiogenic shock is diagnosed at the time of a heart attack, treatment of both often occur simultaneously. Life-saving treatments may include:​

  • CPR
  • Oxygen Therapy
  • Ventilator
  • Medications that increase heart pumping force
  • Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump
  • Percutaneous Left Ventricular Assist Device (Impella)
  • Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI)
  • CABG
