Your cardiologist may recommend a cardiac PET/CT scan to evaluate how well blood flows to your heart muscle. This advanced, non-invasive imaging test helps detect heart disease, assess prior heart damage, and guide the best treatment for your heart health.
With convenient outpatient locations and flexible scheduling, our cardiovascular imaging team makes it easy to complete this important test close to home.
Cardiac PET/CT imaging is one of the most accurate tools available to evaluate coronary artery disease and heart function.
It helps your care team:
Detect blocked or narrowed arteries
Identify heart disease early — often before symptoms appear
Evaluate prior heart damage
Guide treatment decisions with greater precision
“Cardiac PET imaging is considered the gold standard for non-invasive assessment of blood flow to the heart.”
— American Society of Nuclear Cardiology
A cardiac PET/CT scan is a non-invasive test typically completed in about 1–1.5 hours.
During your visit:
A nurse will review your medical history and medications
An IV will be placed in your arm or hand
Small monitoring patches will track your heart rhythm
You will lie comfortably on a padded scanning table
Medication will safely simulate gentle exercise for your heart
Images will be taken of your heart at rest and under stress
You will be awake and monitored closely by our cardiovascular imaging team throughout the test.
Most patients resume normal activities shortly afterward unless instructed otherwise.
Following preparation instructions carefully helps ensure accurate results.
48 hours before your test:
Avoid all caffeine (coffee, tea, soda, chocolate, energy drinks, and decaf products)
6 hours before your test:
Do not eat or drink
Small sips of water may be allowed for medications
Day of your test:
Wear comfortable two-piece clothing
Avoid metal zippers or buttons
Bring a list of medications and inhalers if used
Arrive 30 minutes early
Your care team will provide specific medication instructions prior to your appointment.
We are a preferred provider for most major insurance plans and offer convenient outpatient imaging locations throughout the region.
If you have questions about your upcoming cardiac PET/CT scan, preparation instructions, or scheduling, please contact your care team at the clinic where you receive care or through our patient portal.
