About Abdominal Aorta Duplex

Abdominal Aorta Duplex Q & A

What is an Abdominal Aorta Duplex Scan?

An abdominal aorta duplex test is like an echo on the heart but it scans the main artery in the abdomen. It uses sound waves to look into the artery checking for blockage or enlargement. It gives the diameter of the artery as well. This study also looks at the iliac arteries that branch down the pelvis and legs. It can also scan the kidneys (renal arteries).

How to Prepare for an Abdominal Aorta Duplex Scan?

To get the best results, the abdominal aorta duplex studies are done on an empty stomach.

  • No food, drink, or coffee after midnight the night before the test. In the morning of the test, you are allowed a small sip of water.

  • Wear comfortable, 2-piece clothes

  • If you smoke, please refrain from smoking at least 6 hours prior to the test. Nicotine can produce gas in the abdomen. Bowel substance and gas can prevent the technologist from getting the most accurate information. Since it is very important for your abdomen to be free of contents as well as gas, it is very important to follow instructions.

  • Take your regular scheduled medication unless otherwise instructed by the ordering doctor.
